For his 5 month birthday, we made an outing to the Boston Common Frog Pond for ice skating! Thank you, Grandpa, for the great Christmas present! Daddy was a MUCH better skater than Mommy. Everyone had a good time!
We continued our solid food attempts through the month, but they didn’t really improve very much. We read that you should let your baby explore his food, so we took that to heart!
Over Martin Luther King weekend, the entire family headed up to Killington for a ski weekend with the New York City crew. The weekend was a frigid one and there was limited skiing done. There was, however, hot tub time and wine tastings. Jack did a great job on his first big group get away. He slept well and made a lot of new friends. We even got to meet Ethan Dudley (2 months younger than Jack) on our way up to Killington.
During the Killington trip, Jack developed a funny habit of spinning around in his crib at night. In the middle of the night we found him perpendicular in his crib, and by the morning his head was at the opposite end of the crib. Mommy was dying to take a picture of the funny move, but Daddy said no.
On the way home from skiing, we made a quick stop in NH to say hi to Grammy and Papi. Jack enjoyed some time in the exersaucer – his first encounter with one! Mommy and Daddy slipped away for a couple of hours to go see Sherlock Holmes in the theater.

Jack also has a new ‘tired laugh.’ It’s a random laugh that comes out when Jack is tired. He’ll be in the middle of drinking a bottle and randomly starts laughing. It’s pretty funny. Witness it yourself with the video links below.

It was in January that Jack had his first non-family babysitters! Dani came from a recommendation from Ann Quandt’s former nanny, Lindsay. Dani has been a great Saturday night babysitter. Mommy and Daddy have started going out on the town every Saturday night. It has been a ton of fun, and Jack doesn’t mind given that he’s in bed between 6:30 and 7pm!
Unfortunately Jack had to miss his final ISIS Next Steps class because he was at the doctor’s office being diagnosed with an ear infection. January was not a great month from a health perspective. Poor Jack first had pink eye and then had a left ear infection that lasted 20 days (2 courses of medicine)! On the bright side, Jack had some great week days at home with mommy and daddy. Here he is working from home with mommy one afternoon.

Jack and daddy had some stressful Sundays of Patriots' game watching during January, and Jack’s first Super Bowl was a disappointing one with a Patriot’s loss to the Giants. Jack may have been predicting the loss with the fussy face in this photo. We’ve been going to mass together as a family and this was the Super Bowl Sunday mass. Nearly every child in Boston was wearing Patriots' gear that day!

Mommy decided to buy Jack a St Patrick’s Day outfit. Unfortunately, the outfit was a bit too small!

Jack didn’t seem to mind, though, as he became preoccupied with one of his favorite toys at Bright Horizons – the colorful beach ball!

As Jack approached 6 months, he started to find success at sitting! Sitting seems like one of the best milestones because he’s still not mobile (so no worries about baby-proofing yet!), but he has more access to toys and viewing the world around him.
In January we also had a visit with the Kirkowski’s who were visiting from California! Jack was able to meet Maggie and the new JP who is 2 months younger than Jack.
Grandma and Grandpa were going through withdrawal after the Christmas vacation together, so we drove down to Sturbridge to meet them for brunch at the Publick House. It’s a great meeting spot. Did we mention how much Jack loves his pacifier?!
