The quality of the first week (and really all of the first few months of the baby's life) are so dependent on sleep schedule. I think we were very fortunate with Max over the first week.
Saturday night: In the hospital. Our first night. Max was sleepy. We tried waking him to feed but he didn't eat much.
Sunday night: In the hospital. After sleeping the day away, Max was ready to be up and eat through the night. It was 2 hr feedings consistently through the night.
Monday night: Max is definitely less sleepy at night than during the day, so we are working on that! Naps during the day helped with recovery. Tad went into work but came home early for a nap. Jack did a great job sleeping. He didn't yell down to us at all in the middle of the night and slept until 6:30! Blake was good as usual.
Tuesday night: Max did much better at night. Fell asleep more easily after each feeding (every 2-2.5 hrs). Again, Jack was great. Didn't hear from him until 6:30am. Blake was good as usual. Boys still appear to be really into Max. Jack likes touching his soft head. Blake points to his hand and says "boo boo" because Max still has a bandaid on from his IV in the hospital.
Wednesday: At 4 days old, Max was 7lbs 8oz, down 10% and down to 43rd percentile from his birth weight of 8lbs 4oz and 79th percentile. 4-5 days is the trough of post-birth weight.
Wednesday night: A great night. Max had two stretches of 4 hours between feedings rather than 2 hours. It makes such a big difference.
Thursday night: Max ate at 10:30pm, 1:15am, 4am, and 8am. Very manageable!
Friday night: Max ate at 11:45pm, 2:50am, 5am, and 8am. Again, woke up pretty refreshed! He does seem to have a "witching hour" after his 9/10pm feeding where he doesn't easily go to sleep. He likes to be held.
Monday night we forgot to set the 4 hour alarm for the evening and Max slept for 4hr 40min. It was wonderful. He ate at 9:40pm, 2:20am, and 5:45am. Tuesday night things got even better when Max slept 6hr 45min between feedings.
We have settled into a rough pattern of 9:30pm, 2am, 5am, and 8:30am feedings.
At 13 days, Max was up to 9lbs 2oz (72nd percentile) and 22" (98th percentile).
We will see how things evolve!
